Mikata’s vibrant participatory performance leaves students with an understanding of Africa’s strong links to the cultures of the U.S., the Caribbean and South America. Led by Master Teaching Artist, Richard Hill, Mikata invites you to join in the dancing, singing and chanting of other countries.
Mikata Hands on African Drumming and Dance (Grades K-12)
Mikata means “all of us” in the Ewe language of Ghana! Everyone is invited to participate on a musical journey from West Africa to the Caribbean and Brazil. Mikata will make your pulse quicken as chant, clap and dance to powerful rhythms from Ghana, Nigeria, Cuba, Puerto Rico, Haiti and Brazil. Garbed in colorful traditional cultural clothing, the artists of Mikata perform on an array of authentic drums, bells, rattles, flutes and xylophones. Students, teachers and families will dance, sing and clap to the rhythms of Mikata as they learn about the cultures of African nations, the Caribbean and South American countries Length: 45 minutes

Mikata Drum Tales (Grades K-6)
Join Jeff McQuillan and Richard Hill as they take you on adventures across the globe. Meet Baduasemanpensa, the African princess, and Anansi the Spider and other fascinating characters. Learn an African dance, a song, or a rhythm game as you become part of the story. Length: 45 Minutes

Middle School Radio Show
Richard Hill will engage your students in creating a 30-minute radio show that features your school’s learning environment, activities and creative projects. Students will write and read scripts, practice diction, articulation and projection and expand their vocabularies as they brainstorm ideas and discuss issues. The finished product will be broadcast on a local community radio station and can also be uploaded to your school’s web site.
